Zepbound success at 5 months! Body fat down; muscle/bone mass up

I wrapped up five months on my GLP-1 medication yesterday, so I thought I’d provide an update of my Zepbound success. Overall, I’m very happy with my progress and hope to continue on this medication for the unforeseeable future.

Improved health stats, according to my Renpho

I use two smart scales to track my weight loss progress: a Renpho, which integrates with a smart measuring tape, and an Omada, which my insurance company provided to me. (Read my review of the Omada scale and weight loss program.)

The Renpho tracks many stats in addition to weight. There’s no way for me to know how accurate the measurements are, but when I checked yesterday, several key indicators had improved since I started my journey on January 29, 2024.

My Zepbound success is clear to see in the below stats.

  • BMI: Down 6.3 points (but I’m still obese)
  • Body fat: Down 9.8%
  • Subcutaneous fat: Down 7.9%
  • Visceral fat: Down 5 points
  • Body water: Up 6.8%
  • Skeletal muscle: Up 5.7%
  • Bone mass: Up 0.6% (went from below average to average)
  • Protein: Up 2.6%
  • BMR: Up 126kcal

I’m especially happy that my skeletal muscle and bone mass readings were better. I’m over 50 and things like bone and muscle health are increasingly important for my quality of life going forward.

Zepbound success: Less inflammation and pain

Since starting Zepbound, I’ve noticed a dramatic decrease in inflammatory pain in my knees and ankles.

However, truth be told, my left hip hurts more now than it did before. I believe it may have to do with my weight loss. Where I’m carrying my weight has changed, so my body may be recalculating things like my walking stride. I’ll keep watching this, and hopefully, my hip will settle down over time. If it doesn’t, I’ll discuss it with my orthopedist at my next visit.

Significant weight loss

I started working on my weight loss on January 1, 2024, but I couldn’t get my first Zepbound pen until January 29. I lost about 9 pounds before starting the injections and 34.3 pounds thereafter, which means I’ve lost 43 pounds since the beginning of the year.

The wrap-up

I’m feeling optimistic about the rest of my journey with Zepbound. I have a long way to go to reach my initial goal (100-pound loss), but it feels doable, especially with the help I receive as a Weight Watchers Clinic patient.
